SSB audio always sounds muddy on the other end — what am I doing wrong

so ive been on HF for about two years now mostly doing digital but lately trying to get into SSB phone more and honestly my audio reports have been all over the place. some guys say im punchy and clear, others say i sound like im underwater or in a barrel. im running an IC-7300 with the stock mic, nothing special, and i havent really touched the TX EQ settings at all because frankly the menu system kind of intimidates me on that radio even though ive had it for ages.

my shack is just a spare bedroom, no acoustic treatment or anything, ceiling fan running most of the time. i sit maybe 4-5 inches from the mic which i think is probably fine but maybe not? had a guy last week on 20 meters tell me my lows were way too heavy and it was making it hard to copy me, and then an hour later someone else said i sounded great. so idk if its just subjective or if theres actually something i should be fixing on my end.

anyone have like a go-to EQ setup for the 7300 for voice that actually works well, or general tips for getting decent SSB audio without spending a fortune on a fancy mic

the ceiling fan is probably killing you more than you realize, especially if its anywhere near the mic. low frequency rumble gets picked up real easy and on SSB it just turns into mush on the other end. first thing id do is turn it off when youre operating and see if you get more consistent reports.

on the 7300 specifically, the default TX bandwidth is pretty wide and the bass response on the stock mic element is kinda boomy. go into the menu and bump the low cut up to like 100hz or even 150hz, most of the voice intelligibility is in the mids anyway and cutting the lows cleans things up a lot without making you sound thin. i also roll off the highs a bit above 2700 or so just to keep the audio from getting harsh. takes maybe 10 minutes to mess around with and the difference is noticeable.

also mic distance matters more than people think, closer means more bass proximity effect, farther means more room sound. try staying consistent around 2-3 inches and talk across the mic slightly rather than straight into it, reduces plosives too.

yeah honestly inconsistent reports on SSB are just kind of the nature of the beast sometimes, band conditions change, the other station's ears are different, their radio's AGC is doing weird things, whatever. but the barrel sound specifically usually means either too much compression or youre overdriving the mic input. whats your ALC doing? if its pegging constantly you're probably overprocessing.

i went through the same thing when i first got serious about phone ops. ended up getting an Heil headset which helped a lot just from the mic element being voiced more toward the speech frequencies, but honestly getting the settings dialed in matters more than the mic hardware up to a point. stock mic on the 7300 isnt bad its just not optimized out of the box.
