SDRplay RSP1A vs HackRF for general monitoring — worth the price difference?

so ive been running an RTL-SDR v3 dongle for about a year now mostly doing aircraft stuff with dump1090 and some wideband scanning just to see whats out there. its been great for the price honestly but im starting to feel the limits of it, particularly on HF where the direct sampling mod only gets you so far and the noise floor is pretty rough.

been looking at either the HackRF One or the SDRplay RSP1A and i cant quite decide. the HackRF has the transmit capability which is appealing even though i have no specific use case for it right now, and the RSP1A seems like it would actually be a noticeable step up for receive quality. budget is somewhere around $150-200 range so either one fits.

anybody gone from RTL-SDR to one of these and actually felt the difference day to day? or is it one of those things where you spend the money and then realize the antenna was the problem all along

went through basically this exact decision about two years ago. ended up with the RSP1A and honestly for pure receive quality it was a pretty noticeable jump from the v3 dongle, especially on HF. the noise floor is better and the dynamic range makes a real difference when you're trying to pull weak signals out near a strong broadcast station or whatever. SDRuno is a bit clunky to learn but once you figure it out it works fine, or you can just use it with SDR# if you dont want to bother.

the HackRF is a different kind of device though. its got 20MHz bandwidth which is great for certain things but its a pretty mediocre receiver compared to the RSP1A at the same price. the transmit thing sounds cool but if you already have a licensed radio setup you probably wont use it as much as you think. if your main goal is better receive performance id go RSP1A without much hesitation.

the antenna comment is real though lol. i upgraded my sdr before fixing my antenna situation and yeah. that said the RSP1A is genuinely better hardware, not just marginally. the multi-tuner thing where you can run two receivers simultaneously in SDRuno is actually useful sometimes for things like monitoring a repeater input and output at the same time or whatever.

one thing worth mentioning is SDRplay has been pretty good about driver support and the RSP lineup works well with SDR++ which is what a lot of people use now instead of SDR# anyway. cleaner interface imo and actively developed. if youre on linux that matters a lot actually, the RTL drivers are rock solid but some of the others have been hit or miss depending on distro.
