so i got my general ticket back in the spring and ive been mostly just ragchewing on 40m and doing some SOTA stuff on weekends which has been awesome btw. but a few guys at my local club keep talking about CQ WW and how its this huge deal and i should try it. i looked it up and yeah it does seem like a big deal, like tens of thousands of operators all at once which sounds both exciting and completely terrifying honestly.

my setup is nothing special, ic-7300 into a trapped vertical in the backyard, maybe 100 watts. i dont really know the exchange format or what zone i need to give out or any of that. do i need special software or can i just jump on and work stations manually with paper logging? and is Field Day at all similar to this or is that a totally different thing operationally. i did Field Day with the club this year but we had guys running everything so i just kind of sat there and pushed the keyer button when they told me to.

also wondering if theres anything else worth doing before end of year, ive seen some mentions of a november sweepstakes thing too

CQ WW is honestly one of the best ways to actually learn contesting because theres SO much activity you can just tune around and figure out the rhythm pretty quick. the exchange is simple — your signal report and your CQ zone, for most of north america thats zone 5 or 4 or 3 depending where you are, easy to look up. N1MM+ is what most people use for logging and it handles all that automatically once you set it up, worth taking an hour to get familiar before the contest weekend.

Field Day is kind of its own thing, its more of a club/emergency preparedness event with a weird scoring system, not really a traditional contest even though it feels like one. November Sweepstakes is actually fantastic for new contesters, domestic only so the band conditions dont matter as much and the exchange has more info in it which helps you slow down and actually understand whats going on. dont skip it. your ic-7300 and a vertical will do fine, ive worked plenty of countries in CQ WW with worse.

yeah definitely try it, worst case you make like 20 contacts and have fun. the zone thing confused me too at first but once you look at a zone map it clicks fast. i think im zone 4 up here in michigan but honestly i still double check every time lol

one thing i'd add is just dont stress about your score your first time out. i spent my first CQ WW just hunting and pouncing, never called CQ myself, and it was way less stressful that way. you kind of learn the pacing and the lingo just by listening to how other people do the exchange and copying them basically. SOTA is actually good prep for this stuff in a weird way because youre already used to quick efficient exchanges
