so ive been hunting parks for about 3 months now and finally decided its time to flip it around and do my first activation. planning to hit a state park about 45 mins from me, its listed as K-4872 i think, gonna double check that before i go obviously.

my plan is to bring the ft-891 and my buddipole since i dont have a good portable antenna situation yet. was thinking 40m and maybe dabble on 20m if propagation cooperates. my question is more about the logging side of things — do i need to upload to POTA.app the same day or is there a grace period? i remember reading something about this but cant find it now. also do hunters generally expect you to spot yourself or do people spot you? i dont want to come across as one of those guys who just sits there calling CQ forever with nobody answering lol. anyway any tips appreciated, kinda nervous about the whole thing even though im not contesting or anything, just feels like a big deal for some reason

congrats on making the leap, first activation is always a little nerve wracking but youll do fine. on the log upload question — you have a few days, i think its like 7 days or something, definitely not same day required. but i usually just upload mine that night when i get home while its fresh. as for spotting yourself, totally fine to do it, thats what the POTA spot system is there for. just go to pota.app and throw yourself up on there once you start calling, hunters are watching that constantly. honestly once you get a few QSOs in you kind of forget youre nervous and it just feels like regular radio. 40m is a solid choice, especially in the afternoon. have fun with it

the buddipole on 40m might be a bit of a pain depending on how you configure it, just a heads up. i tried running mine on 40 portable once and the coil adjustment took me forever to dial in. might be worth doing a quick tune at home first if you havent already so you know the settings before you're standing in a field squinting at an SWR meter. also bring more water than you think you need, learned that one the hard way last summer. good luck out there
