so I passed my technician exam about three weeks ago and my call finally showed up in the FCC database, got assigned one of those sequential calls which is fine I guess but its kind of a mouthful and doesnt really mean anything to me. a buddy at the club mentioned I could apply for a vanity call instead and I looked it up on the ULS site and now im more confused than before lol

like is there a waiting period or something? I thought I read somewhere you have to wait 30 days after getting your sequential call before you can even file for a vanity but then someone else said thats not a thing anymore. also how does it even work, do you just pick whatever call you want and if nobody else wants it you get it? or is there like a lottery? what happens if two people apply for the same call at the same time

I know I could probably figure this out by reading through the FCC rules but honestly its a lot and I was hoping someone here could just explain it in plain english. I dont have any specific call in mind yet just something shorter would be nice, im in the 4 land if that matters

yeah the 30 day thing used to be real but they got rid of that requirement a while back, you can apply for a vanity pretty much right after your license posts to the database. what you do is go into the ULS filing system, log in with your FCC registration number and password, and file a Form 605 — theres an option in there specifically for vanity callsign request

as for how it works, you can list up to 25 calls in order of preference and the system processes all applications that come in during the same filing window together. so if two people both apply for the same call in the same batch it goes to whoever has licensing priority — like an extra class can bump a tech for the same call, and then within the same license class I believe it goes to whoever filed first, though honestly that part has tripped me up before too. if your first choice is taken your second choice gets considered and so on down the list

the windows close and process on a set schedule, I think its still every couple weeks or so. you can check the AE7Q website, that guy has an amazing tool for looking up what calls are available in your district and tracking application status. made the whole thing way less confusing for me when I went through it a few years back

went through this exact thing last year, the AE7Q site the other guy mentioned is seriously the move, I spent like an hour on there just browsing available calls in the 4 district before I even started my application. ended up with my second choice which I was totally fine with

one thing nobody told me ahead of time — make sure your FRN account info in the FCC system is all correct before you file because I had an old address in there and it caused a weird delay. probably wouldnt have been a big deal but it stressed me out at the time. good luck with it, getting a call that actually means something to you is pretty satisfying
