so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (tech class) and i've been borrowing my buddy's Baofeng UV-5R to mess around on the local repeaters but he wants it back and i figure its time to just get my own radio. i was just gonna grab another UV-5R since i know how it works already and theyre like 25 bucks but a few people at my club meeting last week were kind of snooty about it and said i should get something better.

the thing is i dont really know what better means in this context. like what am i actually getting if i spend $150 on a Yaesu FT-60 vs just buying two UV-5Rs for the same price. is the audio quality actually noticeably different or is this one of those things where experienced hams just dont like cheap Chinese radios on principle. genuinely asking not trying to start a fight about it lol

mostly i just want something that works on 2m and 70cm, decent audio so people can understand me on the repeater, and something that wont die on me. dont really need APRS or anything fancy right now. any thoughts appreciated

Honest answer — the UV-5R will work fine for what you're describing, especially just getting started on local repeaters. The snobbery around them is partly justified and partly just old hams being old hams. The real issues with the cheap Baofengs are things like frequency accuracy being slightly off sometimes, the receive sensitivity isn't always great, and they can occasionally TX on weird frequencies if you're not careful with programming. For just hitting a local repeater and chatting though, most of that won't matter to you day one.

That said, if you can stretch to something like the Yaesu FT-65 (not the FT-60, the newer one) or even a used FT-60 off eBay, you'll notice the audio is just... clearer. Like noticeably cleaner on receive. And they're built like tanks. I've had mine for probably 8 years and dropped it more times than I want to admit. Battery life is also genuinely better on the Japanese radios in my experience.

If budget is real tight though, grab the UV-5R and use the savings toward your next license class. Gear matters less than getting on the air and actually operating.

i was in almost the exact same spot last year lol. ended up going with a Wouxun KG-UV9D and honestly im pretty happy with it, its sort of a middle ground — better build than the baofeng, way more memory channels than i'll ever need, and it does some extra bands too which i dont use yet but maybe someday. cost me around 70 bucks on sale i think.

one thing nobody told me that i wish they had — budget some money for a better antenna too. the rubber duck antennas that come stock with basically any HT are kinda mediocre and a decent aftermarket one made a noticeable difference for me hitting a repeater thats on the edge of my range. something to keep in mind whatever you end up buying
