so i finally did my first solo activation last weekend at a state park about 45 mins from my house. ive been hunting for about 6 months and figured it was time to stop being nervous and just do it. threw the 40m dipole up in a tree, ran 100w from the FT-891 off a 30ah lifepo4 and honestly the pile up on 40 was kind of wild for a Saturday afternoon. got my 10 contacts no problem, ended up with like 23 before i packed up.

few things im not sure about though — when people were calling me and i couldnt quite catch the callsign, i kept asking for repeats and it felt like i was slowing everything down way too much. is there a better way to handle partial calls? i know some activators just work the partial and move on but that makes me nervous about logging it wrong. also my spotting situation was a mess, i had to self spot on the POTA app which is fine but my phone signal kept dropping in the park. is there some kind of backup spotting method people use when cell coverage is bad?

overall though it was an absolute blast and i already have another park picked out for next month. US-3421 if anyone wants to hunt me.

congrats on the first activation, 23 QSOs is a solid first run especially on a weekend when the bands can get weird. on the partial call thing — yeah a lot of experienced activators will work the partial, like if you hear "whiskey something foxtrot" you just log W?F and move on, then you can try to look it up later or just let it go. honestly most hunters understand and will just call back if it didnt go through on their end. the POTA system flags unconfirmed contacts and people sort it out. dont stress too much about it or youll grind the whole pileup to a halt.

for spotting without cell, some people bring a little satellite messenger like a Zoleo or Garmin inReach and there are ways to send spots through those but its kind of clunky. the easier thing is just to find a friend who can watch the cluster and spot you remotely if you text them before you lose signal. i usually text my buddy my frequency before i head into the park and he watches for me. low tech but it works.

nice work getting out there. i was terrified my first activation too and kept second guessing everything. re: the spotting thing, i've had luck just spotting myself before i even leave the parking lot while i still have signal, then if the frequency holds ill stay on it and people find me. obviously you have to actually stay on that freq which isnt always possible if someones already there when you get set up but it works more often than not. some parks are just dead zones and you kind of have to accept youll get fewer hunters calling in, which is fine, you can still get your 10 from cold calling on a busy frequency or just CQing until someone bites.
