so ive had my IC-7300 for about 3 years now and honestly its been a fantastic radio, no real complaints. but ive been eyeing the IC-7610 for a while and the dual receiver thing is really calling to me especially during contests when i want to run two bands at once. problem is the price jump is pretty significant and im not sure the shack justifies it right now.

my current setup is the 7300 running into a Ameritron AL-811H, dipole up about 40 feet for 40m and a trap vertical for the higher bands. nothing fancy. i do mostly casual operating, some SSB contests here and there but im not a serious contester by any stretch. occasionally mess around on FT8 when propagation is garbage which lately has been more often than id like.

anyone made this jump and felt like it was actually worth the money? or am i just falling into the upgrade itch trap again. my wife already thinks i spend too much on this hobby so id need a good argument lol

I made that jump about 18 months ago and honestly for casual contesting it's probably overkill. The dual receiver is nice but you really only get the full benefit if you're running SO2R and have a second antenna system set up properly - otherwise you're kind of paying for a feature you'll use maybe 10% of the time. The roofing filters on the 7610 are noticeably better though, on a crowded 40m evening it makes a real difference compared to the 7300. If I'm being honest I don't regret it but I also wouldn't tell someone in your situation to rush out and buy one. The 7300 is genuinely a great radio and you're not leaving anything huge on the table for the kind of operating you're describing.

yeah the upgrade itch is real, i get it every couple years myself. one thing worth considering - have you maxed out what the 7300 can do with your current antenna situation? like 40 feet for a dipole on 40m is workable but not ideal, and a trapped vertical has its tradeoffs too. sometimes putting that money into the antenna farm makes more difference than a new radio and it's a easier sell to the spouse because antennas sound boring and cheap even when they arent lol. just something to think about before you drop 2 grand on a rig that'll give you maybe 15% improvement in your actual on-air results
