so ive been on HF for about two years now and honestly my SSB audio has always been kind of mediocre. people can copy me fine but i get comments sometimes about it sounding a bit bassy or muffled, and i finally decided to actually dig into it instead of just shrugging it off.
been running an IC-7300 and just using the stock mic that came with it, the HM-219 or whatever its called. started reading about mic gain and the ALC and how if your ALC is constantly pegged you're probably compressing and distorting more than you realize. adjusted the mic gain down until the ALC was just barely tapping on peaks and immediately people said it sounded cleaner. kind of embarrassing that i didnt do this sooner honestly.
also messing with the TX bandwidth settings on the radio, i had it on wide which apparently for SSB isnt always better, especially if theres noise or adjacent stations. narrowed it a bit and it seemed to help on the receive end for others too according to reports.
anybody have other tips that actually moved the needle for you? like is a better mic worth it for normal ragchewing or is that more of a contest/DX thing. and does the whole speech processor thing actually help or does it just make you sound worse if you dont set it up right
