  1. ha, yeah the Q code thing threw me off too when i started out. the ones you'll actually hear constantly are QTH (your location), QRM (interference from other stations), QRN (static/natural noise), QSB (signal fading), QRT (shutting down, going off air), QRZ (who's calling me), and QSO which just means a contact or conversation. QSL is yeah, confirming the contact, and people also use it to mean the actual card you mail someone. once you get those down you'll cover like 90% of what comes up in normal ragchewing. for the number stuff, 73 is just "best regards" basically, kind of like saying goodbye but friendlier. 88 is love and kisses, traditionally used toward YLs but honestly its just casual now. OM means old man which sounds rude but its just how hams refer to each other, and YL is young lady regardless of actual age. dont overthink it, you pick it up fast just from being on the air.
  2. I'm a General class operator and debating whether to upgrade to Extra. I understand Extra Class grants access to all available amateur band frequencies and provides more room during crowded conditions like contests and DXing. But how much difference do those extra frequency segments really make in practice? I'm particularly interested in working DX on 20 meters, which is arguably the best band for foreign contacts. I know General class is prohibited from 7.125-7.175 MHz on 40 meters, but are these Extra-only segments actually where the action happens? Looking for real-world experiences from operators who made the upgrade.
  3. so ive been licensed about 8 months now and everyone keeps telling me i need to try a contest but honestly the whole thing feels pretty overwhelming when i look it up. like i get the basic idea, you make contacts and log points, but theres so much stuff about multipliers and exchange formats and running vs searching and i dont really know where to begin. CQ WW is coming up and everyone acts like its THE contest to do but i also saw people talking about ARRL Sweepstakes and some SOTA stuff too. are those easier to start with or does it matter. my setup is pretty modest, just a technician ticket actually no wait i upgraded to general in march, running a dipole on 40m and an IC-7300 so i think i can get on HF at least. just dont want to make a total fool of myself on the air or mess up someone elses run or whatever also is there like a calendar somewhere that shows all the upcoming contests because i keep finding different lists and none of them seem complete
  4. so we've got a countywide exercise coming up in about 5 weeks and im trying to nail down the power situation before we actually show up and embarrass ourselves. last time we ran off a honda eu2200i and it was fine but a couple of the other operators are pushing hard for going all lithium this time and i'm kind of on the fence about it. the setup is going to be two HF stations running IC-7300s probably, one VHF/UHF station for local nets, and we're also trying to run a winlink gateway off a raspberry pi. so not a crazy amount of draw but its not nothing either. my rough math says we could be looking at 30-40 amp hours over an 8 hour op period if we're being conservative with the HF rigs at maybe half power most of the time. antenna wise we're probably doing a couple of linked dipoles for the 40/80 work and somebody mentioned bringing a buddipole for 20 if we need to talk to state EOC. i've used buddipoles before and they work but honestly for a fixed field site i kinda prefer just throwing up a simple wire. less to go wrong. anyway the real question is — anybody actually run a full exercise day on nothing but lithium batteries and not had problems? we could bring like 3 or 4 100ah lifepo4 packs and theoretically that should be way more than enough but i keep thinking about what happens if something drains faster than expected or we have a cold night. were in the northeast so october temps are a thing.
  5. so ive been trying to work some DX the last couple weeks and honestly the bands have been all over the place. some days 17m is absolutely wide open and im hearing stations from all over europe and asia just pouring in, then the next day its dead as a doornail and i cant raise anyone more than a few hundred miles away. checked the solar flux index and its been bouncing around between like 140 and 180 which i thought would be pretty decent conditions but apparently thats not the whole story? my buddy down the road who's been licensed for 30 years told me to look at the K-index too but i honestly dont fully understand how all these numbers tie together. like i get that higher solar flux generally means better HF propagation but why does it seem so inconsistent day to day even when the flux looks good? is there some other resource besides DXmaps i should be checking before i sit down for a session? would love to actually plan my operating time a little better instead of just hoping the bands cooperate
  6. the workflow question is the right one to be asking honestly. a lot of guys get fixated on the hardware side and then get into the contest and have no idea what to actually do with the second radio. the basic idea everyone starts with is run on radio 1, S&P on radio 2 during the gaps. sounds simple, falls apart immediately when the run suddenly gets busy again and you're mid-QSO on R2 what helped me was just practicing the band change decisions first without worrying about rate. like getting really deliberate about knowing exactly when band conditions justify splitting attention vs when you should just be hammering the run. grayline on 40 going long while 20 is still good is an obvious case. mid-afternoon doldrums on 20 is another. but there's a feel to it that's hard to explain also the logging software integration matters a ton — if you're not already deep into N1MM+ with all the SO2R config stuff sorted out before the contest starts you will spend the first hour messing with settings instead of operating
  7. yeah what he said about the bandwidth thing is the key part that took me a while to get. i was in the same boat when i upgraded and kept wondering why everyone was freaking out about being near 7.300. also worth knowing that 40m has some regional differences too, if you ever work DX stations they might be operating down around 7.100 or so which is in the phone segment for ITU region 1 but thats CW only for us here in the US. so sometimes you'll hear them but cant really call back on the same freq, you work them split. anyway dont stress too much about it, just stay a few kHz inside your edges and youll be fine
  8. so ive been getting into chasing DX a bit more lately and someone at the club mentioned using cluster spots to find activity. I set up an account on QRZ a while back mostly just to look up callsigns but apparently theres a whole spotting/cluster thing on there too that i hadnt really dug into. been playing around with DXwatch as well and honestly im a little confused about how these relate to each other. like are they pulling from the same cluster network or are they separate things? I noticed sometimes the same spot shows up on both within a few seconds and other times theres stuff on one that isnt on the other. also the DXwatch map is pretty cool but i cant figure out if theres a way to filter it down to just certain bands, feels like im missing something obvious. also curious if people use any phone apps for this stuff, i have an android and tried one called DX Toolbox or something like that but couldnt really get it configured right. might have been doing something wrong with the cluster server address.
  9. I consider it to be GOOD OPERATING PRACTICE to use the ITU phonetic alphabet. Whether you are in Indiana or India, as an amateur radio operator you will understand the ITU phonetic alphabet. Save the creative phonetics for casual conversations, but standard ITU shows professionalism and ensures global understanding.
  10. Hi all, new Extra here just passed my test last month. I'm trying to put together my first emergency go-kit and feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the options out there. Main question: What's the most important piece after radio and power? I've got a Yaesu FT-857D and a 35Ah LiFePO4 battery pack so far. Thinking about antennas next - should I prioritize HF wire antennas or VHF/UHF first? Our local ARES group says to be ready for both but my budget is tight. Any wisdom from you experienced emergency communicators would be really appreciated. Thanks!
