I didnt even know there was a Tri-County hamfest, is that the one over by the fairgrounds? I've been wanting to go to one of these but never made it to any yet. would it be weird to show up as a tech licensee with nothing to sell just kinda looking around

the path thing is worth double checking too. WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 is fine for mobile but from a fixed home station a lot of people drop it to just WIDE2-1 or even WIDE2-2 depending on how dense the network is around you. doesnt really solve your immediate problem but its worth knowing. and yeah what the other guy said about reading the path on aprs.fi is the right call, that'll at least tell you whats actually happening to your packets after they leave your radio.

so ive been on HF for about two years now, mostly digital but been trying to get into SSB more lately and honestly my audio just sounds bad compared to what i hear from other stations. not terrible but kind of muffled and thin, like theres no presence to it. im running an IC-7300 into a Heil PR-40 which should be a decent combo right? but when i get reports people always say im readable but kind of low. i've messed with the mic gain and the compression a little but every time i turn up the compression it just sounds distorted or processed. i know the 7300 has a bunch of EQ stuff in the menu but i havent really dug into that yet. is that where im supposed to fix this or is it something with how i have the mic positioned or the gain staging or what. any tips appreciated, been frustrating me for a while now

so ive been trying to get Winlink working for a few weeks now and im losing my mind a little. i get the basic concept - email over radio using Pactor or Vara or whatever, connects to an RMS gateway, gets forwarded to the internet side via a CMS. i get it in theory. in practice something is always going sideways. my current setup is Vara FM on a Kenwood TM-V71A hitting a local RMS gateway that i can see is listed in the Winlink gateway list, decent signal, no issues on the RF side as far as i can tell. but my messages just sit in the outbox. sometimes i get a partial connection - like the handshake starts and then it just dies. i dont know if this is a Vara config thing, a gateway thing, or something on the CMS end. also confused about message handling in general - like when i send a message to a regular email address through Winlink, where exactly does that handoff happen? is it the RMS gateway that pushes it to the internet or does it go CMS first and then out? ive read the docs but honestly they kind of assume you already know some of this stuff. anyone been through this and figured out where to start troubleshooting, because right now im just poking at settings randomly
