  1. For emergency communications, having access to most HF bands is almost a necessity for traffic handling, since amateur HF communications get through without failure during disasters. Winlink HF email system works nearly anywhere in the world with General privileges.
  2. Turn down transmit power - QRP operation conserves a lot of energy for only a modest sacrifice in signal effectiveness. Also make sure you're using a lithium battery pack if available - much better performance than older NiCad/NiMH types.
  3. yeah same boat as you a while back, i just kind of picked it up by listening. honestly on a local repeater nobody really cares and you hear people do it both ways. where it matters is like contesting or if you work DX and the pile is a mess, then if you dont use proper phonetics people will walk all over your call and you'll never get through. i messed up my suffix once during a contest because i said something dumb like "item" for I instead of India and the other op logged me wrong, had to send a correction later. so i guess the answer is it depends but when it counts just use the standard ones
  4. the GS-232 thing is spot on, thats what i use. one thing i'll add — watch out for the pot getting dirty over time if its exposed to any humidity. i had weird heading drift after about a year that drove me crazy for way longer than it should have before i figured out the pot was just grimy. some people use hall effect sensors or a 12-bit encoder instead but honestly the pot is easier to start with just get a decent quality one not the cheapest no-name thing off ebay
  5. omg yes i was on 10m yesterday too this was literally the first real DX opening ive experienced since i got my general last spring. worked a PY station and the guy was just booming in, i honestly thought it was someone local at first. totally forgot about the IC-905 thing gonna have to look that up, microwave stuff seems really advanced but i guess thats kind of the point right, always something new to learn
  6. so i just passed my technician exam last week and im finally ready to buy my first handheld. i thought this would be the easy part but wow there are so many options and everyone seems to have a strong opinion about all of them. ive been reading threads on here for like three hours and im more confused than when i started honestly. my main thing is i want to be able to hit the local repeaters and maybe eventually do some simplex stuff with my neighbor who is a general. budget is somewhere around 80-150 bucks, maybe a little more if theres a really good reason. ive been looking at the Yaesu FT-65, the Baofeng UV-5R which everyone seems to either love or hate, and i saw someone mention the Wouxun KG-UV9D. i dont really know what features actually matter vs what sounds cool in a spec sheet. like dual band seems useful but do i actually need it starting out? and whats the deal with the extended battery options people keep talking about any help appreciated, dont want to make a dumb first purchase
  7. yeah what he said. i was the same way my first few months, just listened to the evening net like five or six times before i actually checked in. felt kind of silly in hindsight because when i finally did it it was like 10 seconds and then you just wait to see if net control acknowledges you and thats basically it lol the special event stations are super fun btw, some of them have really nice certificates or QSL cards they send out. the lighthouse weekend specifically gets pretty busy on 40m and 20m if i remember right, lots of stations to work
  8. i use all three just because why not, takes like two minutes to upload to both LoTW and eQSL after a session. i've gotten confirmations on eQSL from stations that never bothered with LoTW so it does fill in some gaps even if it doesnt count for the big awards. paper cards i only send direct when i really want one from a specific dx entity, otherwise the bureau takes forever and half the time the card never shows up anyway in my experience. oh and checking your LoTW confirmations — log into the website and go to your logbook view, any QSO that has a matching upload from the other station will show as confirmed. if you just uploaded recently it might take a little while for matches to appear especially if the other op doesnt upload often. some guys only upload once a year or after a big trip.
  9. The RSP1B benefits greatly from proper gain staging - try setting the LNA gain to around 5-7 and use the baseband gain for fine tuning. The SDRplay performs well as a base station setup and has far better value for money than most alternatives in this price range.
  10. yeah the PR-40 is definitely on the warmer/bassier side by nature, it picks up a ton of low end especially if youre close to it — proximity effect is real with that mic. what i do with mine is cut a few dB around 100-200hz in the TX EQ and give a little boost maybe around 2-3khz to add some presence. voice intelligibility on SSB lives in that midrange area more than people realize. on the ALC thing, conventional wisdom used to be keep it barely moving but ive seen Icom's own docs say a little bit of ALC action on the 7300 is normal and fine. the thing you dont want is the ALC pegging hard on every syllable, that's when you get that compressed distorted sound. drop your mic gain until the ALC is kissing the top maybe on loud peaks only, then dial in compression from there. i run mine around 3-4 and honestly thats plenty for 40m. anything over 6 and people start noticing.
  11. yeah the gateway status thing is actually something a lot of people run into. if you go to winlink.org and click on RMS stations you can filter by frequency band and mode and it'll show you the last time each gateway checked in with the CMS. anything that hasnt checked in within like an hour or two during normal operating hours is probably down or the sysop is doing maintenance. thats the first thing i check now before wasting time trying to connect on the VARA FM vs packet question — VARA is way faster if the gateway supports it and your path is clean, like sometimes dramatically faster for anything more than a tiny message. but a lot of the older gateways around me are still just running Direwolf on a TNC-Pi or whatever and those are AX.25 only. check the gateway listing, it'll tell you what modes each one supports. if you see a gateway listed as VARA FM capable and it checked in recently, try that one first. just make sure your VARA FM is actually registered or youre gonna hit the speed cap which is annoying but it'll still work also double check your squelch isnt killing the tail end of packets, that bit me for a while
  12. not sure if this is related but i had a similar thing happen with a cheap GPS puck and it turned out it was outputting GGA sentences with a weird datum that wasn't WGS84. aprs.fi expects WGS84 and if your puck is for some reason spitting out something else the position offset can look exactly like what you're describing. probably a long shot but worth checking if the puck has any config utility.
  13. yeah i did almost exactly this about two years ago, except i used a nano instead of a mega and was only switching between two antennas so it was pretty simple. the CI-V parsing is actually not that bad once you get the framing figured out — the tricky part is that the 7300 doesnt always spit out band data unsolicited, you might have to poll it. there's a library on github called IC7300-CI-V or something similar, cant remember the exact name but a search will find it. on the relay board question — most of those cheap amazon boards already have optoisolation built in, look for the EL817 or PC817 chips near the input headers. if you see those youre probably fine. i'd still put a snubber diode across any inductive load you're switching just to be safe but for a basic antenna switch the relay contacts are doing all the work anyway so RF isolation from the arduino side is less of a concern than you might think. the pi doing higher level logic and the arduino doing the actual I/O is a solid approach, thats kind of the standard way to split it and it means you can update the logic without reflashing the microcontroller every time. just make sure your serial comms have some kind of handshaking or at least a watchdog on the arduino side so if the pi crashes the relays dont do something weird.

I'm kind of in a similar spot so can't give a ton of advice but one thing that helped me was watching videos of people actually operating with paddles in slow motion — you can really see how light the touch should be. I was squeezing way too hard for a long time and it was causing all kinds of timing issues. Also I switched to straight key practice for a few weeks just to get my ear connected to my hand better before going back to the paddle, not sure if thats the right approach but it seemed to help me personally.
  15. i went through this exact same thing last spring. ended up doing the vertical with 16 radials on the ground and honestly the noise floor is higher than my dipole yeah, but the low angle radiation makes up for it when conditions are good. worked japan on 40 which i never did with the dipole so thats something. but my dipole is also only like 35 feet up so take that with a grain of salt
  16. so ive been putting this off for way too long but i finally got around to building a simple 40m dipole out of some 14 gauge stranded copper i had laying around in the garage. fed it with 50 ohm coax through a choke balun i wound myself on a mix-31 toroid, about 10 turns or so. got it up in an inverted-V config with the apex around 30 feet on a painters pole i strapped to the fence post. here's the thing — i cut it to the standard formula, 468/f, so each leg is roughly 33 feet. resonant frequency came in around 6.9 mhz on the analyzer which honestly surprised me a little. i expected it to be close but not that far off. the environment around it is pretty dense with trees on both sides and the legs are sloping down at maybe 30 degrees or so, could that be pulling it down that much? i know the inverted-V loading effect shortens the resonant point somewhat but wasnt sure how significant it would be in practice. planning to trim a little at a time but wanted to get some input first before i start hacking away at it. also debating whether to just add a tuner and call it a day since my rig has a built in one. any thoughts on whether its worth chasing the resonance down to exactly 7.2 or wherever i want it vs just using the tuner?
  17. haha yeah the zone thing trips everybody up at first. WAZ uses CQ zones, not ITU zones — there are 40 CQ zones that cover the whole world and you need to work a station in each one. ITU zones are a totally different animal and used for some other awards, HF Century Club being one of them i think. definitely not interchangeable. as for tracking, seriously just get yourself a copy of Log4OM or even just use LOTW and let it do the heavy lifting. if you upload your existing ADI file from WSJT-X to Logbook of the World, it'll start matching your confirmed contacts against DXCC entities automatically. same goes for Club Log — upload your log there and it'll show you a map of what you've worked and what's confirmed. you'd be surprised how much progress you might already have without knowing it. FT8 is totally valid for all the major awards by the way, no worries there. i worked most of my first 100 DXCC entities on FT8 with a pretty modest setup. the dipole might limit you on some of the rarer ones but for getting started it's absolutely fine. just keep logging everything, upload to LOTW regularly, and sort it out later — that's pretty much what everyone does.
  18. For timing, once you understand the pattern, timing becomes everything - you can place your call at the moment when the operator is most likely to hear it. I've had good success with transmitting slightly higher than the main pile as the DX station will often explore the upper edge of a pileup if he can't pick out calls from the main section.
  19. I recommend the Icom 2730A dual band mobile. I have two of them with no issues - 50 watts covering 2m and 70cm. Dual band gives you the most bang for your buck. Don't forget to invest in quality coax - RG-8X minimum for VHF/UHF mobile work.
  20. im kind of in the same boat as you, been at it for maybe three months now. i use the morse code ninja videos on youtube and they really helped me get the letters down, he does these word lists at different speeds and it starts to feel more natural after a while. the app i use day to day is called morse mania i think, its pretty basic but i do like ten minutes on my lunch break and it adds up. honestly the hardest part for me was not looking at charts and just trusting that id recognize the sound eventually, feels weird at first but your elmer is kind of right that listening helps even if its passive. i still cant copy real qso's without struggling but letters and short words are getting there
  21. yeah sounds like the CTCSS was your main issue and you've basically got it sorted. the tone in the listing is what you need to transmit to open the repeater's receiver — think of it like a key. you usually only need to set the transmit tone, not the receive side, unless you want to squelch out other stuff on your end which is a whole other thing. 100.0 hz is pretty common so that checks out. as for etiquette, the most normal thing is to just wait for a pause in the conversation and say something like "[your callsign] monitoring" or if you want to join in just throw your call out there during a break. most people on repeaters are pretty welcoming especially if someone new shows up. the low signal thing is probably just the baofeng putting out less than it claims, or maybe you're on the edge of the coverage area. try a better antenna if you have one, even a slim jim or a j-pole indoors makes a big difference over that rubber duck.
