  1. Been researching remote station options and torn between joining the RemoteHams network for instant access to stations worldwide versus building my own remote setup with wfview and my IC-7300. The RemoteHams partnership with FlexRadio looks impressive, but I'm concerned about sharing time with other operators. For those who've tried both approaches - what are the real-world pros and cons? I need full integration with Ham Radio Deluxe for digital modes and logging.
  2. oh man i remember this exact feeling, it really does feel like a wall. the thing that finally clicked for me was someone telling me to just accept the missed characters and keep going instead of mentally going back to figure out what i missed. your brain wants to solve the gap and that's what makes you fall behind. just put a - in your head and move on, the next word is more important than the one you missed. also 20 minutes a day is fine but try to break it into two shorter sessions if you can. i found 10 minutes twice a day worked better than one long chunk, something about the way the brain consolidates it i think. and honestly just get on the air even if you feel completely not ready, worked way better for me than any computer program. find someone running slow CW nets in your area, QRS nets are real and people are genuinely patient there. you'll get there, 20wpm isnt as far as it feels right now.
  3. yeah i ran almost exactly this setup for about two years before i moved and took the station down. RemoteHams itself has its own audio codec stuff baked in and it actually handles latency pretty well compared to raw RDP or VNC solutions, the default codec settings worked fine for SSB but i did have to tweak the buffer sizes a bit to get CW tolerable. not great but workable. the SDR integration part is where it gets complicated though. RemoteHams RCForb client can show a panadapter if your radio supports it natively via USB or if you feed it a CAT-linked SDR but its not really designed to be an SDR receiver on its own, its more of a radio control interface. if you want a proper waterfall from an Airspy or RTL you're probably looking at running SDR# or SDRangel at the remote end and screensharing just that window which is kinda janky but people do it. or there's stuff like openwebrx running as a local server at the remote site and you just browse to it, that works surprisingly well for monitoring. the linking part to echolink or IRLP is kind of a separate thing entirely, those are really repeater linking protocols and unless youre trying to tie your remote station into a repeater network i wouldnt go down that road. if you just want to operate HF remotely RemoteHams or something like hamlib + a web interface is probably cleaner
  4. Working on optimizing my SSB setup for both DX and local ragchewing. I understand the theory behind speech processing but struggling with practical application. Compressors even out peaks and valleys automatically but introduce timing delays and compromise decisions. How do you balance increased talk power from processing against maintaining clean, natural-sounding audio? Normal SSB provides 20% duty cycle (20W average), compression can increase to 40% (40W average). What are your preferred settings and when do you choose to run without any processing?
  5. so ive been at this for about 8 months now and honestly the progress from 5 to around 12-13 wpm felt pretty natural, like i was just doing my daily sessions with the Koch trainer and things were clicking. but somewhere around 13-14 wpm it just... stopped. i can copy most of the characters fine when i really focus but as soon as i try to bump up the speed even a little it all falls apart and i start missing stuff and then i get in my head about the missed characters and then i miss even more, you know how it goes. im using the G4FON trainer mostly and doing about 20-30 minutes a day. someone told me to try Farnsworth timing which i did for a while and that helped me learn the characters originally but im not sure its the right tool for where im at now. also been listening to W1AW code practice when i can catch it. anyone else hit this wall and actually get through it? wondering if im doing something wrong or if this is just one of those things where you have to grind through it
  6. not sure how to even put this but ive been licensed since 98 and something just feels off lately. like the bands are there, conditions have actually been pretty decent this cycle, but theres just less... energy? i dunno. got on 40m last weekend and had a nice ragchew with a guy in ohio for like an hour and that was great but outside of that its mostly contest stations and the occasional net. maybe its just my local area or my antenna situation but i feel like the hobby has this weird quiet to it that wasnt there 15 years ago. could just be me getting old lol
