confused about where exactly i can operate on 40m as a general
ok so i passed my general a few weeks ago and ive been trying to figure out where i can actually transmit on 40 meters. i looked up the band plan and the FCC allocations but honestly it kind of confused me more than it helped. like i see 7.125 to 7.300 is general phone but then someone in my club was talking about band edges and how you should stay away from them? i dont really understand why. also is the band plan like a law or just a suggestion because i saw something on the ARRL site that seemed like it was just recommended. anyway if someone could just explain in plain english where i should be parking for a casual SSB QSO without stepping on anyone or operating somewhere i shouldnt be that would be great

using arduino to automate my antenna switching — anyone done this?
i did something similar but went the raspberry pi route mostly because i already had one sitting in a drawer doing nothing. ended up being a bigger project than i planned, added a web dashboard so i can see antenna status from my phone which is kinda neat but definitely not necessary lol. python makes the serial stuff really easy with pyserial but like the other guy said the boot time is annoying if you ever lose power, arduino just comes back up instantly. one thing worth mentioning — make sure whatever relay board you use is rated for the voltage you're switching, some of the cheap ones are fine for 12v control circuits but check the coil voltage matches your supply. also if you're in a high RF environment near your antennas you might get weird behavior from induced RF on the arduino gpio lines, had that problem and had to add some ferrites on the control cables which cleared it right up.

using DXwatch vs QRZ cluster spots — which do you actually use day to day
good question and honestly the answer is kind of both — they do pull from overlapping sources but not identical ones. DX Summit (which is the OH8X cluster web interface) and DXwatch both aggregate from the Telnet cluster network but they have different filters and refresh rates. QRZ's spot page is convenient if you're already on the site but it tends to lag a bit compared to going straight to DXwatch in my experience. for day to day use i usually have DXwatch open in a browser tab and i've got it filtered to just the bands im interested in so i'm not drowning in FT8 spots when im trying to work SSB. you can also set it to show only certain modes which helps a lot. if you have logging software like Log4OM or even WSJT-X for digital modes, a lot of those can connect directly to a Telnet cluster and pull spots right into the program which is even cleaner than a website. worth looking into once you get the hang of things.

checking into nets for the first time — kinda nervous about it
so i finally got my technician a few months back and ive been mostly just listening to repeaters and doing a few simplex contacts with a buddy down the street. but i keep hearing about these nets and how they're a good way to actually get on the air regularly and meet people. i found what looks like a local 2m net on a repeater i can hit pretty easily, it runs monday nights around 8pm. my question is what do i actually do when the net control calls for check-ins? do i just say my callsign? do i say something else? i honestly dont want to sound like an idiot on my first try and i keep second guessing myself every monday and then the net ends and im mad at myself for chickening out again lol also someone mentioned something about a special event station that was happening this weekend for some kind of anniversary thing but i couldnt find much info on it. is there a good place to look those up?

trying to study for tech exam but not sure where to even start
I passed mine last spring and pretty much just used hamstudy the whole time, didnt read any book. took me maybe two weeks of messing around with it during lunch breaks. the way the site tracks which questions you keep getting wrong is super helpful, it kind of automatically makes you focus on your weak spots which is nice. the electrical theory tripped me up too at first but honestly on the actual exam the math questions are pretty straigthforward, like they give you numbers that work out cleanly. just memorize the triangle trick for ohms law if nothing else

finally putting together a go-kit, not sure where to start
yeah what he said about ares is good advice. i will add though, dont wait until your kit is perfect to get involved. I showed up to my first ARES meeting with literally just my HT and a spare battery pack and nobody cared, they were just glad to have another operator. you learn way more at those meetings and exercises than reading about it. one thing i wish somebody had told me early on — write down your frequencies, your login info for whatever digital modes you use, any notes about your setup, and laminate it or stick it in the case. sounds dumb but when things are actually stressful you will forget stuff you think you know by heart.

confused about vanity callsigns and how the whole process works
went through this exact same thing about a year ago. the AE7Q site the other guy mentioned is seriously the way to go, i spent way too long on the FCC site before someone pointed me to it. i got my vanity call within like 3 days of applying which honestly surprised me, i expected it to take weeks or something. good luck, its kinda fun picking one out

first attempt at a QRP transmitter — got signal but something's off
yeah the 2N2222 is almost certainly your issue there, that thing really isnt meant to be a final even at QRP levels if you're trying to get a clean output. the absolute max collector dissipation on those is like 625mw and if youre getting 200mw out youre probably dissipating more than that depending on your efficiency. it'll run but it'll be unhappy and the distortion will show up exactly like you're describing. try dropping in a 2N3904 as driver and put something beefier in the final, even an IRF510 would let you clean things up a lot and theyre like a dollar. also worth checking your dc bias on the base of the final, if the transistor isnt biased right into the operating region for class C it'll distort. for CW class C is fine but you need the drive level to actually be enough to swing it properly. the LPF should take care of most harmonics if its built right but you want the fundamental clean before it even gets there.

JS8Call vs FT8 for low power stuff — is there actually a difference in practice?
so ive been running FT8 for about a year now mostly on 40 and 20m with a modest setup, like 25-30 watts into a wire dipole in my attic. works fine, log lots of DX, whatever. but i keep reading about JS8Call and how its supposedly better for weak signal stuff and also lets you actually have a conversation unlike FT8 which is basically just an automated exchange machine. tried JS8Call for the first time last weekend and honestly i dont know what to think. the waterfall seemed a lot less busy than FT8 which makes sense i guess since fewer people use it. made a couple contacts but it felt slow. like really slow compared to just watching FT8 rack up QSOs. my question is mostly about the weak signal performance. is JS8Call actually pulling signals out of the noise better than FT8 or is that kind of a myth? i know FT8 is rated to like -24dB SNR which already seems insane to me. does JS8Call go deeper than that or is it just different. also is there a meaningful community on JS8Call still or did most people just stick with FT8 and call it done
