so i finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 40 minutes from my house, been putting it off for months because i kept convincing myself i wasnt ready or didnt have the right gear. ended up just throwing my KX2 and a 40ft wire in a backpack and going for it.

got there around 10am and found a picnic table near the parking lot, figured that was good enough. spent maybe 15 minutes just getting the wire up in a tree with a fishing pole — that part was way easier than i expected honestly. got spotted on the pota app by some guy i dont even know and suddenly i had a small pileup going which was kind of wild for a first timer.

ended up with 23 QSOs on 40m and 6 on 20m before the battery started getting low, which i think counts as a valid activation. my question is about the logging — i was just writing call signs on paper while operating and i'm not sure if i need to upload the log a certain way to the pota website. also does the park reference number matter for the spot or does the app figure that out? i looked at the website and its a little confusing with all the different fields.

congrats on the first activation, 23 QSOs on your first time out is actually a solid number, some people struggle to hit the 10 minimum when they're just starting out. the wire and KX2 combo works great, that's basically what a lot of activators use.

for the log upload — ADIF format is what the pota site wants. if you're using HAMRS or Fast Log Entry to transcribe your paper log those will export ADIF directly. you just go to your account on the pota website, click on upload log and drop the file in. the park reference (like K-1234 or whatever your state uses) does need to be in the log, i believe it goes in the SIG_INFO field in the ADIF. the app doesnt auto fill that from the spot, you have to make sure it's in the actual log file or the upload might reject it or associate it with the wrong park. the website has a log template page that explains the fields if you dig around a bit. worth double checking your callsign matches exactly what's on your FCC license too, had a friend get a mismatch error because he had a suffix wrong.

oh man this is making me want to finally do mine, i've had my general for like 8 months and keep doing the same thing you described, talking myself out of it. what antenna were you using exactly, just end fed or a random wire? im trying to figure out the simplest setup to start with
