so ive been running a diamond X50 colinear for a few years now on my back deck, works fine for hitting the local repeaters and doing some simplex with the guys in town. but lately ive been thinking about whether a yagi would be worth putting up, mainly for weak signal stuff on 2m ssb and maybe some tropo when conditions are decent.

the thing is im not really sure if the gain difference is actually noticeable in practice or if its one of those things that looks good on paper but you dont really feel it day to day. the X50 is rated at like 6.5 dBd on 2m which is already pretty decent for an omni. a decent 5 or 6 element yagi would obviously beat that but then id lose the omnidirectional coverage which i kind of rely on for rag chewing and monitoring the local nets.

anyone been through this decision? did you end up going with both and just switching between them? or is there some other setup im not thinking about. my mast situation isnt great so adding a second antenna is a bit of a project but not impossible.

yeah i went through this exact thing about two years ago. ended up putting up a 9 element M2 yagi for 2m on a separate mast pointing northeast toward the beacon cluster, and kept the colinear on the original mount for everyday use. honestly the yagi completely changed what 2m meant to me — i was suddenly hearing stations id never even known existed, tropo openings that before just sounded like noise floor suddenly had actual callsigns in them.

the gain difference between a halfway decent colinear and even a modest yagi is not subtle on weak signal. you're also swapping receive noise figure considerations — a good preamp at the yagi feedpoint makes even more difference than the antenna gain itself sometimes. i run an SSB Electronics preamp right at the mast and that was probably the single biggest improvement i made to the whole station. if your shack is more than about 15 feet of coax from the antenna you are losing more than you think on 2m.

switching between the two is pretty painless with a coax relay, i have mine on a footswitch which sounds silly but its actually great when youre in the middle of a qso. if your mast situation can handle a second mount even a small one, id say just do it. the X50 is a solid everyday antenna but for weak signal work it aint gonna cut it once you know what youre missing.

im in a similar spot actually, been debating the same thing for months. one thing i havent seen mentioned much is fixed yagi orientation — like if you point it at where most of your interesting paths are, do you end up frustrated when something comes in from the wrong direction. i dont have an azimuth rotator and wasnt planning to get one, budget reasons mostly, so thats kind of holding me back from committing to a yagi setup.
