honestly im kind of in the same boat as you, been chasing DX for maybe 6 months and still figuring out the cluster thing. one thing i noticed is that spots can be dupes or even wrong sometimes — like someone spots a callsign on the wrong freq or mistakes the call entirely, so i've learned to not just blindly trust every spot, especially for rarer entities. verify with your own ears first if you can. also the time of day filter on DXwatch is really underrated if you're only active certain hours. i narrowed mine down to roughly my operating window and it made the whole thing way less stressful to look at

the general exam is definitely a step up from tech but its not as scary as people make it out to be. i used hamStudy.org and just did like 20-30 questions a day for about three weeks and passed pretty comfortably. the propagation stuff does take a little while to click but once it does it kind of makes sense on its own terms, like once you understand that higher frequency bands skip farther and that 40m is generally better at night than 10m it starts to feel logical instead of random for bands as a general youre basically looking at good chunks of 80, 40, 15, and 10 meters plus some of 20 which is honestly the workhorse band for a lot of HF work. you wont have the full privileges a extra class has but theres plenty of room to operate and have fun. 40m is where id start once you upgrade, there's always activity there day or night and you can hit pretty good distances without needing a fancy antenna setup. just make sure you read up on the phone vs cw segments so you dont accidentally transmit in the wrong part of the band

oh man i just did my first one like two months ago, i was nervous too lol. the 44 QSO requirement threw me off at first because im used to POTA where 10 is enough to count. took me a while but i got there. bring more battery than you think you need and honestly just have fun with it, the chasers are super friendly and plenty of people will ask which programs you're activating so they can log accordingly

so i finally worked up the courage to check into our local 2m weekly net last night and honestly it did not go the way i planned at all. i had my callsign ready, knew the frequency, had my radio on the right offset and tone... and then when the net control called for check-ins i just sat there for like 10 seconds before finally keying up. and when i did i forgot to give my callsign phonetically which i know you're supposed to do and the net control had to ask me to repeat. felt so embarrassed even though everyone was super nice about it. anyway my question is more general i guess — is there like an unwritten order to things when you check in? like do you wait for a pause, do you just jump in when net control says check-ins are open? and whats the deal with tail-ending, someone did it after one of the other stations and i wasnt sure if that was rude or totally normal. im only about 3 months into my ticket so still learning all this stuff.
