I used Dan's KB6NU No-Nonsense study guide - the PDF version is completely free. Combined it with practice tests on HamExam.org. The free approach worked great for me, passed on first try. Don't overthink it - the question pool is public so any decent resource will get you there if you put in the time.

SO2R timing — when does it actually start paying off during a contest
honest answer — it took me two full contest seasons before SO2R felt natural and not like im actively fighting the setup the whole time. and the first season i probably would have scored higher just going back to SO1R, no joke. the timing thing you're describing is real and its not something you can logic your way through, its genuinely a muscle memory thing. you have to rep it. the antenna isolation question is the one i'd focus on first actually because if you dont have that sorted out youre going to be chasing your tail with RFI the entire time and it'll make the learning curve feel way worse than it actually is. what antennas are you working with? that matters a lot. dipoles close together on adjacent bands are a different problem than yagis with 30db of F/B on separate towers. i spent probably 3 weekends just with a signal generator and my SDR tracing interference paths before i even tried to operate SO2R in a real contest. worth every minute of it. as for radios, the K3 is a solid choice for second radio, its SO2R pedigree is well established. just make sure whatever combo you end up with supports proper band data output so your logging software can handle the interlocks automatically. doing that manually is a nightmare and not really viable at any kind of useful rate.

first WWFF activation - didnt realize how much goes into logging the ref properly
yeah the 44 QSO minimum catches a lot of people the first time, dont feel bad about it. the good news is you can go back and activate the same reference again and as long as you hit the threshold that time it counts. some folks treat the first visit as a scouting run anyway. for spotting - wwff.us has a spots page and a lot of activators also post on the POTA spots app since there's overlap with hunters who chase both programs. announcing on your local club's facebook or email reflector the day before can also pull in a few extra chasers who will specifically look for you. and honestly if conditions are rough just call CQ a little longer before moving bands, sometimes it takes a minute for people to find you especially if youre not on a busy calling frequency. the logging thing is real though, i'd strongly recommend switching to an app like HAMRS or even just a simple spreadsheet on your phone that forces you to record UTC. paper logs are fine but you have to be disciplined about it in a way that's easy to forget when youre also trying to operate and watch for weather and whatever else is going on in the field.

DXpedition bandwidth management - How wide is too wide for SSB pileups?
Calling stations by number in the call will instantly silence 90% of the pile-up. If you call "1"-stations only, the big guns of that description will call and can be worked easily. Once they are gone, the QRP and DX stations will have a clear channel and can also be worked. This technique is far superior to 25 kHz wide chaos on 20m.

RemoteHams SDR setup with internet linking — anyone actually running this long term?
so ive been messing around with remote station control for about 8 months now and finally got something stable-ish running but im curious if anyone is actually doing this with RemoteHams and also tying in some kind of internet linking like echolink or allstar on the backend my current setup is a kenwood ts-590sg at the remote end, running the RemoteHams client software on a dedicated box out there, and it mostly works but i keep running into these weird latency spikes that make it basically unusable on SSB when my connection gets flaky. CW is fine, digital is fine, but voice is just rough sometimes. the SDR side is actually kind of interesting because ive got an rtlsdr plugged into a pi at the same location and i was trying to use that as a panadapter feed through the RemoteHams interface but honestly the integration is clunky and i dont think thats really what the software was designed for the internet linking piece is where i get confused. ive got an allstar node at home and i was thinking about somehow bridging that to the remote location so i could do some linked repeater stuff through the remote rig but i cant quite figure out if that even makes sense architecturally or if im just creating a mess. anyone tried something like this? or is there a smarter way to think about the whole thing

what do all these Q codes actually mean, guys keep using them on the air and i have no idea
yeah what he said, and also dont worry too much about knowing all of them at once. there are officially like 200 something Q codes but most of em you'll never hear in your life. the ones on CW are used way more than on phone too, like on SSB people will say QRM but on CW they might just send the code without saying the whole word. oh and one more -- QRP means low power operation, you'll see that one a lot on the forums and sometimes on the air when someone mentions theyre running 5 watts or whatever. thats kind of a whole subculture honestly.

first ARES activation experience — didn't really know what to expect
congrats on the first activation, that runner situation sounds like it went exactly right. i remember my first one was a bike race and i stood in a field for 6 hours and literally nothing happened but i was completely exhausted afterward just from the mental alertness of waiting, which surprised me. the logging tip above is good, i do the same thing now. also making sure your battery situation is solid before a long event helps a lot, nothing worse than watching your HT drain and not having a spare when youre 4 miles from anyone.

finally cracked a pileup after years of just giving up — what changed for me
the listening before transmitting thing took me forever to actually internalize, i kept just wanting to jump in. also whats your antenna situation now? im in a similar spot with a vertical and 100w and wondering if its even worth trying for the really rare stuff or if im just wasting everyone's time in the pileup lol

finally cracked a decent pileup last weekend, here's what actually worked for me
the partial call thing is real but you have to be careful with it. it works best when the dx op is clearly fishing and you can tell they heard a fragment of something. if the band is relatively quiet and you can hear them say "kilo whiskey" or whatever, then yeah throwing just your suffix makes sense. but in a full on wall of noise pileup it can backfire because other guys with the same suffix are doing the same thing and you end up creating more confusion not less. the thing you said about watching where they're pulling stations from is honestly the most underrated skill in pileup work. most guys just transmit constantly and never stop to actually listen. i spent three years doing that before a friend of mine who does a lot of DXpeditioning told me the ops on the other end can almost always tell which stations are actually listening vs just hammering away. they tend to avoid the hammerers after a while because it's a mess to pull a call out of someone who's clearly not paying attention to where the op is working. also timing matters way more than raw power. getting your call in right as the previous QSO ends, like literally in that half second gap, is worth more than another 100w in most cases.

anyone else do the tuesday night 2m net regularly? wondering about check-in procedures
yeah same boat here when i started lol, i actually wrote my callsign on a sticky note and put it on the radio the first few times because i kept blanking when it was my turn. nets are great practice though. there's also a bunch of special event stations that do net-style operations during things like Field Day or the Thirteen Colonies event in July if you want something a little more exciting to aim for once you get comfortable with the basic check-in stuff

studying for tech license, any tips on what to actually focus on?
the question pool thing isnt cheating thats literally how everyone does it lol. the FCC publishes the exact pool and the test comes straight from it, memorizing is the whole point. i used gordon west study guide years ago when i did mine, thinner than the ARRL book and laid out way better for just passing the exam. not saying the ARRL stuff isnt good but its more reference material than test prep. one thing i'd add is dont stress too hard about fully understanding every concept before you test. get the license first and then you'll learn way more just by actually getting on the air. i barely understood what a repeater was when i got my tech and within a month of actually using one it all clicked naturally

SDRplay RSP1A vs just getting a HackRF — worth the price difference?
had an RSP1A for a couple years and honestly for receive-only work its hard to beat at that price point. the dynamic range is noticeably better than the dongle and HF coverage is real coverage not the direct sampling workaround. SDR++ works fine with it now, the sdrplay api driver thing was a pain maybe 2 years ago but its pretty sorted out at this point, at least on ubuntu it just works for me. the HackRF is a different animal though. yes it transmits but the receive performance is actually worse than the RSP1A in a lot of situations, higher noise figure and only 8 bit ADC vs the RSP's 14 bit. if you genuinely dont care about transmitting i'd skip it. the one time it makes more sense is if you want to experiment with things like replay attacks or portapack stuff but thats a whole different rabbit hole. for just listening and doing ham stuff the RSP1A is the move imo

RemoteHams vs rolling your own remote setup — anyone actually compared these?
been running RemoteHams for about two years now, the RCForb client specifically. it does work with WSJT-X but you have to set up a virtual audio cable and a virtual COM port to make the CAT stuff work through it — VAC or VB-Audio and a null modem emulator like com0com. its not plug and play by any stretch but once its configured it does stay up pretty reliably. i wrote down every step the second time i set it up because the first time i had no idea what i'd done to make it work. the SDR side, i havent used that as much because my remote rig is an IC-7300 and i mostly just run it through the normal radio control path. but a friend of mine uses their panadapter integration and says its decent for monitoring the band while operating. 25-35ms should be totally fine for FT8, ive run it at higher latency than that without issues. SSB is workable too at that latency, a little floaty feeling but not bad. the shared receiver network — honestly i think parts of it are still active but its kind of hit or miss whether a given node is online. its more of a community thing where people volunteer their receivers. worth poking around in the client to see whats showing up live.

anyone else catch the 10m opening yesterday? also some news on that new Icom
so i was just spinning the dial on 10 meters around 2pm local time yesterday and all of a sudden the band just lit up out of nowhere. was working stations in South America like they were next door, S9 signals, just incredible. havnt seen 10m like that in a while honestly. solar flux has been climbing and i think we're really starting to see what solar cycle 25 can do. if you havent been checking 10m lately you might want to start poking around up there more often. also saw some chatter on a couple of the usual sites that Icom is apparently getting ready to release something new in the mid-range HF market, something to compete with the 7300 but with some upgrades. nobody has confirmed specs yet and i dont want to spread rumors but it sounds like it might have a built in tuner improvement and better filtering. take that with a grain of salt obviously. anyone else heard anything about this or have more details?

confused about the callsign process after passing my exam
congrats on passing the exam. ok so here's how it basically works -- when the FCC processes your application you'll get a sequentially assigned call, which just means they pull the next available callsign from a pool based on your district and license class. for tech you'll probably end up with a 2x3 format like KD9XYZ or whatever depending on your region. that part is automatic and you dont have to do anything. the vanity system is totally separate. once you have your license you can apply through the FCC's ULS system for a specific callsign that's available, and yeah it's actually free now -- they dropped the fee a while back. the catch is popular calls get a lot of applications at once and the FCC does a batch processing thing where everyone who applies during the filing window has equal shot at it, so it's not strictly first come first served for the real desirable ones. your friend's 2x1 call was probably either inherited, applied for when competition was lower, or he just got lucky in a batch. honestly just wait for your sequential call to show up first, get on the air, and then look into vanity later once you know if you even care about the call format. some people obsess over it and some never bother.

solar flux has been nuts lately — anyone else getting weird band conditions?
same boat as you honestly, licensed about 8 months ago and the propagation stuff is still kinda mysterious to me. what helped me was downloading the HamSphere or just using VOACAP online to predict paths — you put in your location and where you want to work and it shows you which hours are most likely for a given band. doesnt always match reality but it at least gives you a starting point so youre not just spinning the dial hoping something shows up. also joining a few DX clusters on the web made a huge difference, when i see a spot pop up for like a VU or 9V1 on 10m i just jump on the radio and sure enough the band is open. kind of learned to trust the cluster more than my own predictions at this point lol

going from 5wpm to 20wpm - how long did it actually take you?
so ive been at this morse code thing for about 3 months now and im stuck around 7-8wpm which is better than when i started but honestly feels like im running into a wall. i can copy most letters fine if the guy is sending slow but the moment anything speeds up my brain just locks up and i start missing everything and then i panic and miss more stuff. been using the lcwo website which is pretty good i think, and ive heard about the koch method but im not sure if i should switch or just keep grinding with what im doing. also someone at my club said to listen to fast code even if you cant copy it yet, like just have it on in the background? does that actually work or is that just something people say anyway just curious how long it took people to get from 5wpm beginner stuff up to actually being able to have a real qso at like 20wpm. feels like forever away right now

trying to study for my tech exam, not sure where to even start
hamstudy is honestly all you need for most people. i studied for maybe 5 days using just that site and passed with a 33/35 or something like that. the way it works is it tracks which questions you keep getting wrong and drills you on those more, so its pretty efficient. the electrical theory stuff looks scary but for the tech exam you really dont need to deeply understand ohms law or anything, you just kind of learn what answer goes with what question if that makes sense. there are a few concepts worth actually understanding though, like the difference between simplex and repeater operation, and the band privileges stuff because that actually matters when you start using the radio. for the baofeng youll mostly be on 2m and 70cm so pay attention to those sections. the ARRL technician manual is good if you want to actually understand whats going on but for just passing the test hamstudy is fine

yeah i drove in day by day last time and it wasnt too bad if you leave early. the swap area gets picked over pretty fast though so first morning is really the time to go. my local club rents a van every year if your near a club that does that kind of thing might be worth asking around

Great job jumping in! Your experience with the power issue is exactly why we do these exercises. Consider getting a proper deep-cycle marine battery and a small solar panel for next year. I've been doing SET for over 20 years and still learn something new each time.

I just passed my Extra exam last month and finally worked up the courage to check into our county ARES net tonight. I've been listening for a few weeks to get familiar with the format, but I'm still nervous about sounding like a newbie. The net meets every Thursday at 8pm on our local 2-meter repeater. Any advice on proper check-in procedure or net etiquette? I really want to support emergency communications in our area, but don't want to mess up the formal traffic handling they seem to do.

20m Vertical vs Horizontal Dipole - Real World Comparison
After extensive testing, if you really want that rare DX, buy a small compact beam. For all other purposes a horizontal dipole, even at low height, seems hard to beat. Your results match my experience perfectly - verticals are overhyped unless you have optimal conditions.
