  1. yeah i went through this maybe eight months ago. the AE7Q site the other guy mentioned is really the best starting point, i spent probably an hour just browsing calls before i found one i actually liked. one thing i'll add — if you apply for a vanity call and you listed multiple choices on your application (you can do that) the FCC processes them in the order you listed them so put your most wanted one first obviously. also the whole thing took maybe two weeks from application to the new call showing up in the system for me, wasnt as painful as i expected. good luck with the new ticket

  3. The final straw was when I started noticing my signal reports on 20m were consistently a little soft. Not terrible, but guys on the other end would say things like "you're Q5 but a bit down compared to others." And I knew my antenna was decent. I'd modeled it, I'd trimmed it, the SWR at the radio was reasonable. But something felt off and I kept coming back to that sad, weathered collection of coax running from my shack window out to the fence post and up to the antenna. So I finally ordered a 100-foot roll of LMR-400 from a supplier I trust, a couple of PL-259 connectors rated for LMR-400, and a proper weatherproofing kit with self-amalgamating tape. Total came out to around $95 which, yeah, stings a little, but honestly I should have done this from the start instead of piecing things together. The Old Coax Was Worse Than I Thought Before I even started installing the new stuff, I cut open the end of that old RG-8X section near the barrel connector. The braid was greenish. Not like a little tarnish — actually corroded green in spots. And the center conductor had some discoloration too. I have no idea how long that coax had been sitting outside before I got it at the hamfest, but clearly it had seen better days. Water had definitely gotten in somewhere along the run. Lesson thoroughly learned: don't buy unmarked coax at hamfests unless you're absolutely sure what you're getting and plan to test it properly. I checked the barrel connector too and found one of the center pin connections was barely making contact. Honestly the whole thing was one good rain away from completely failing. It's a little embarrassing to admit because I know better, but sometimes you just want to get on the air and you tell yourself you'll fix it "later." Installing the LMR-400 LMR-400 is noticeably stiffer than RG-8X, which took some getting used to. Running it around corners and through the window feedthrough required a little more patience. I used a standard oval feedthrough plate that I'd installed when I built the dipole — gave myself about 2 inches of clearance so the coax could make a gentle bend rather than a sharp one. You don't want to kink LMR-400, it doesn't forgive you the way smaller coax does. Putting on the PL-259 connectors for LMR-400 is a little different than for smaller cable. I used the solder type connectors, not crimp. There's a specific adapter/reducer that goes with LMR-400 and you have to prep the cable really carefully — strip the jacket back the right amount, fold the braid back cleanly, make sure the center conductor is long enough but not too long. I watched probably four different YouTube videos on this before I felt confident, and I still did a practice run on a scrap piece of coax first. My first attempt was okay but the solder on the center pin wasn't quite right so I redid it. The second one came out clean. I ran the whole 100 feet as a single unbroken piece, which was the whole point. No barrel connectors, no splices, nothing. Zip-tied it along the fence with UV-resistant ties at about 18-inch intervals and gave it a drip loop before it enters the feedthrough. Then wrapped both ends — the connector at the antenna feedpoint and the connector at the feedthrough — with self-amalgamating tape. That stuff is genuinely great. It fuses to itself and makes a completely waterproof seal. I've had regular electrical tape fail on outdoor connectors before, so I don't mess around anymore. The Results Were Actually Kind of Exciting First thing I did after hooking everything up was run through the bands with an antenna analyzer. SWR curves looked essentially the same as before, which was expected — the antenna didn't change. But then I got on 20m and started listening around. I noticed the noise floor seemed slightly better, which could be placebo, could be real. Hard to quantify on receive. On transmit though, I got a few signal reports within an hour of getting back on the air and three out of four of those contacts mentioned my signal was solid. One guy in Colorado said I was "full quieting" which was really satisfying to hear because he's someone I've worked before and I know he gives honest reports. I can't say with scientific certainty exactly how many dB I recovered by fixing the feed line, but the line loss difference between beat-up RG-8X with a bad connector versus clean LMR-400 over 100 feet is probably somewhere around 1.5 to 2 dB at 14 MHz. Not earth-shattering, but real. What I'd Do Differently If I'm being honest, I'd have bought good coax from day one. I know LMR-400 is pricier but over a 100-foot run to an HF antenna it's worth it. The price per foot sounds scary but you're not doing this every year if you do it right the first time. I'd also invest in a proper coax seal product earlier rather than hoping electrical tape would hold up. One other thing — I'm going to start keeping a short log of my coax runs, what type, when installed, connector type at each end, and any weatherproofing applied. Nothing fancy, just a notepad file. That way if I'm troubleshooting in two years I don't have to try to remember whether that outdoor connector was properly sealed or not. Anyway, if you've got a gnarly feed line situation you've been ignoring, take this as your sign to deal with it. It's not glamorous work and there's no big dramatic moment like hoisting up a new antenna, but a clean feed line is kind of the foundation everything else depends on. My 40m dipole and the 20m vertical both deserve better than what I was feeding them through, and now they've got it. Next project is probably going to be proper grounding and bonding at the station entry point. I've got a ground rod but the bonding between it and the shack panel is not great. That'll be its own adventure.
  4. field day is absolutely where you should start, no question. its designed to be a little chaotic and forgiving and theres usually a club doing it near you so you dont have to figure it all out solo. you can just sit next to someone experienced and watch for a while before you ever touch the mic. the exchange is dead simple too, just your operating class and your ARRL section, thats it. i did my first field day maybe two years after i got licensed and i was still nervous, so 8 months in is totally fine. CQ WW is a whole other animal. the exchange involves serial numbers and CQ zones and if you dont know your zones its gonna feel rough. id honestly say do a full field day first, then maybe try a state QSO party where the exchanges are easy, then work up to CQ WW. SOTA is kind of separate from all that — its more about hiking to a summit and making contacts than racking up points in a log, really scratches a different itch. but it is addictive once you start.
  5. had the exact same thing in my old jeep with a 7900, drove me crazy for months lol. for me it ended up being the mag mount coax itself — the shield wasn't making great contact with the mount and it was picking up all kinds of crud. i swapped to a NMO mount through the roof and the noise basically disappeared. mag mounts are convenient but they're not always the greatest for RF grounding especially on vehicles with weird roof coatings. just something to consider if the power line stuff doesn't sort it out
  6. yeah i ran almost exactly this setup for about a year, IC-7610 at the remote end with an RSP1A hanging off the same machine via USB. the SDR stream back to me was the bigger bandwidth hog than the rig control honestly, i was pushing SDRuno at like 2MHz span and it was eating maybe 8-10Mbps on its own depending on compression settings. so on a 15Mbps uplink you'd be cutting it close if you want any headroom for the actual audio what i ended up doing was running the SDR panadapter locally only — meaning a small headless PC at the remote site just serves the panadapter through a browser via OpenWebRX, and i pull that up in a second window while the RRC handles the rig. works pretty well and the bandwidth for OpenWebRX is way more forgiving than trying to stream raw IQ. latency on the panadapter doesnt really matter since youre just looking at it the Allstar thing is a whole separate deal, dont mix those two projects up in your head or youll confuse yourself. Allstar is really for linking repeaters and nodes together, not for remote HF control. you could technically run both on the same machine but theyre solving different problems
  7. so i passed my technician exam last tuesday and just got my callsign assigned yesterday, KD9 something something i wont bore you with the whole thing. anyway i was so nervous to key up on the local 2m repeater but i did it this morning while driving to work and this older guy came back to me right away and we talked for like 10 minutes about nothing really, just signal reports and where i was located and stuff. honestly felt kind of surreal after studying all those questions for weeks. my HT is just a baofeng uv-5r which i know everyone has opinions about but it worked fine and the guy said my audio was decent so im happy. not sure what i do next honestly, maybe try to find a local club or something. just wanted to share because i feel like nobody in my regular life understands why this is a big deal lol
  8. This happened to me too when I was starting out. The vast majority of dismissals are because people request call signs that aren't actually available or are outside their license class. Make sure you're using multiple databases - AE7Q, RadioQTH, and the FCC ULS search. The $35 fee stings but it's a learning experience!
  9. wait so 10 meters was open? i had my radio on and didnt even notice, i was probably on 40m doing some slow speed CW practice and totally missed it. im still pretty new and honestly havent really figured out when to check which bands yet, is there like a good resource for knowing when propagation might be good on the higher HF bands? i keep seeing people talk about solar flux but i dont really know what numbers to look for
  10. yeah PSK31 is pretty much a ghost town now on most bands, which is a shame because i always liked it. you could actually have a real conversation, exchange signal reports that meant something, talk about your rig or whatever. FT8 is great but its basically automated at this point, half the contacts i make my radio is doing everything while im getting coffee. JS8Call i tried for a while but honestly the activity level was kind of frustrating on my end, maybe depends on your region. 40m seems like the best bet. the store and forward messaging stuff is neat in theory especially for emcomm use cases but i never really got a ragchew going the way you describe. might give it another shot on weekends when im not contesting. RTTY is another one that still has decent activity because of the contests but outside of RTTY Roundup and a few others its hard to find anyone. its kind of sad honestly. the waterfall on 14.080 used to be packed.
  11. so we ran a simulated disaster exercise last Saturday with our local ARES group and honestly I wasnt prepared for how much I learned. the scenario was a major flood event, county EOC gets stood up, hospitals and shelters need net check-ins, the whole deal. on paper it sounds straightforward right? but when you're actually trying to coordinate traffic between three different agencies who all want things done differently it gets real messy real fast. the biggest thing that bit us was logging. we had like four people trying to handle message traffic and nobody had agreed ahead of time on whether we were using ICS-213 forms or just free text logs. total chaos for the first 20 minutes. the net control guy (who is very experienced, been doing this for 30+ years) said this was actually the most realistic part because real disasters always start that way. we also had a scenario inject where the repeater went down and we had to shift to simplex. that was where things really fell apart because half the team didnt know the backup simplex frequency we'd filed in the EOP. lesson learned there for sure. anyway curious if anyone else does these drills regularly and what the biggest surprises were for your group. do you do tabletop stuff or full-on simulated exercises with actual radio traffic?
  12. so i just got my technician license last month and im finally ready to get my first handheld. ive been lurking on here for a while and reading reviews but honestly the more i read the more confused i get. everyone seems to have a strong opinion one way or the other. my main use would be local repeaters, maybe some simplex with a buddy who lives about 8 miles away (lots of flat farmland between us), and eventually i want to get into APRS but im not sure if i need that built in or if i can add it later somehow. budget is probably under $200 but i could stretch a little if something is really worth it. ive been looking at the Yaesu FT-60, the Kenwood TH-D75, and obviously everyone mentions the Baofeng UV-5R but people seem pretty divided on those. what would you guys actually recommend for someone just starting out? dont want to spend a ton but also dont want to regret it in six months.
  13. so ive been running N1MM for contests for probably 4 or 5 years now and it does what it does, no complaints really for things like sweepstakes or FD. but lately ive been doing more FT8 on the side and the way WSJT-X talks to N1MM feels clunky to me. like it works, the QSOs come through via UDP and log into N1MM fine, but theres always this weird moment where i have to make sure the right contest is set up on the N1MM side or it just dumps everything into the wrong log and then im cleaning up dupes later. a buddy of mine keeps telling me to look at Log4OM because he says the WSJT-X integration is cleaner and it handles the adif imports better. i tried it for like a week and honestly got confused by the interface, felt like there was a lot going on. maybe i just didnt give it enough time. my actual question i guess is — does anyone run Log4OM during contests specifically, or is it more of a day to day logging thing and you just switch to N1MM when a contest comes around? i cant figure out if im supposed to use both or just pick one. seems like overkill to have two loggers running but maybe thats just how people do it
  14. the ALC thing is probably your culprit honestly. if its bouncing around heavily that usually means the mic gain is too high and youre driving the TX chain harder than it wants to be driven, which causes exactly the kind of peak clipping you're describing. on the 7300 i'd back the mic gain down until the ALC is just barely moving on normal speech peaks, like occasional flickers not constant deflection. the manual has a suggested procedure but i found setting it by ear with a friend on the other end works better anyway. compression can help but it has to be set right — too much and it just makes everything sound pumpy and fatiguing to listen to, which is almost worse than no compression at all. i run maybe 4-5dB on mine for casual contacts and bump it up a bit if conditions are rough. also the bass thing is real with the stock mic, the proximity effect if youre talking too close will make you sound muddy. try staying a few inches back and talking across the mic not directly into it.
  15. the documentation thing is huge and honestly most people skip it. i laminated a little card with all the local repeater info, the simplex calling freq, my callsign phonetics, and even a basic ICS message format reminder. took maybe an hour to make and its been the most useful thing in the whole kit multiple times. when youre stressed and tired at 2am your brain does not remember tone squelch codes trust me. also — and this might sound dumb — a small roll of electrical tape and a couple zip ties. i cannot tell you how many times ive seen guys at actual deployments scrambling for something to secure a coax or label a connector. the fancy stuff is great but those little things save you. your power setup sounds reasonable for a start. id say get even a small 50 watt panel before you think youre done, three days is fine on 30ah if youre smart about it but longer events get dicey real fast especially if its cloudy.
  16. so ive been messing around with an arduino mega for the past few weeks trying to get it to handle my antenna switching automatically based on band changes from my IC-7300. the idea is pretty simple — radio sends CI-V commands out the USB, the arduino reads that, figures out what band im on, and fires the right relay to switch between my yagi and my vertical. on paper it makes total sense but im running into weirdness with the serial timing. basically what happens is the arduino will catch maybe 3 out of 5 band change commands correctly and then just miss the others entirely. ive tried adjusting the baud rate, tried adding delays, tried using a software serial on different pins thinking maybe the hardware serial was conflicting with something but nothing has really fixed it consistently. im using a level shifter between the radio and the arduino because the CI-V runs at 5v logic and i didnt want to risk the mega's pins. also considered just ditching the arduino and moving to a raspberry pi zero W so i could run a proper python script with threading and not worry about blocking loops — but that feels like overkill for just switching 4 relays. has anyone actually built something like this that works reliably or am i missing something obvious with the serial handling
  17. yeah 10m has been really something this cycle, glad you're catching it. honestly solar cycle 25 has exceeded a lot of the predictions the forecasters put out a few years ago, nobody really expected it to get this active this fast. the last peak around cycle 24 was kind of a disappointment compared to historical maximums so people were a bit skeptical going in. the DX expedition you're thinking of might be the one to Wallis and Futuna, I saw it mentioned on the ARRL news page a few weeks back. think they were planning operations on multiple bands including some of the digital modes. worth keeping an eye on the DX cluster if you haven't set that up yet, it makes finding active expeditions a lot easier especially when you're still learning where to look. your first real solar max is genuinely a treat, you picked a good time to get into HF.
  18. I'd focus on your top choice rather than spreading yourself thin. Each application requires a $35 fee, and with the lottery system, multiple applications don't really improve your odds for specific calls. Better to put all your research into finding the best single target.
  19. I run 2.4 kHz most of the time but switch to 1.8 kHz in contests when the bands are packed. Distortion should be at least -40 dB at 6 kHz separation - anything wider than 6 kHz at -40 dB is considered poor quality.
  20. no hard rule on most bands, its just good practice especially when signals are marginal or theres QRM. on HF you'll quickly figure out that even what sounds like a perfectly clean signal to you might be getting pulled out of the mud on the other end. phonetics basically just make your callsign stick out. that said on local 2m repeaters where everyone already knows who you are its a bit overkill yeah. the pileup thing is totally normal by the way, everybody blanks on a phonetic at some point. i once said "November" twice for the same letter and didnt even notice until someone pointed it out later. just keep using them and it becomes automatic after a while, like you wont even think about it.
  21. Working on optimizing my FT8 setup and wondering about interface modifications beyond the basic USB sound card approach. Currently using a SignaLink USB but getting occasional decode issues during heavy band activity. Considering either the Digimaster interface or building a custom isolation transformer setup to eliminate ground loops. Also interested in any mods to improve the audio response curve - seems like the factory response rolls off around 2.8kHz which might be impacting weak signal copy. Anyone experimented with different op-amp configurations in their interface circuits? Looking for that extra 2-3dB improvement in SNR for those marginal FT8 contacts.
  22. yeah the third party traffic thing trips people up every time, especially shelter staff who just see a radio and think it's basically a fancy walkie talkie that connects to everything. i had almost the exact same situation a couple years back at a red cross shelter, lady wanted me to call her cousin in another state to let him know she was okay. i mean the intention is totally understandable but still. what i've started doing is keeping a little printed one-pager that explains in plain english what amateur radio emergency communications is good for and what it isnt. laminated it, costs nothing. hand it to whoever's in charge when you arrive. most of the time they appreciate having something physical to reference and it takes the awkwardness off you personally. also on the logging thing, have you looked into the ARES Connect stuff or just basic net logging templates? some districts have a pretty streamlined paper form that makes the 214 easier to fill in after the fact. might be worth asking your EC what they use locally
  23. yeah 40m in the evening is something else. i do the same thing honestly, theres always something going on. heard a guy last week doing a mobile from his truck on a long drive, just chatting with a buddy back home. real slice of life stuff. sometimes i forget thats what this hobby was always supposed to feel like before everyone got obsessed with FT8 and chasing awards
  24. yeah the three-tab workflow is pretty common when you're starting out, dont feel bad about it. honestly a lot of us still do something similar. what helped me a lot was setting up DX4WIN or if you want free, look into using Log4OM — it has a built in cluster connection and will flag new entities automatically based on your log. saves a lot of the back-and-forth with QRZ. as for telnet clusters, yeah people absolutely still use them, its not old school at all. most logging software can connect directly to a cluster node and youll get spots streaming in real time. DX Summit is basically a web front end for the same data. the AR-Cluster network is still very much alive. once you get your logging software pulling spots and cross-referencing your log automatically youll wonder how you managed without it the phone apps are kind of hit or miss in my experience. Ham Radio Deluxe has a decent spot browser if youre already using that suite but i know its not free
  25. not a dumb question at all, everyone starts somewhere. so hamstudy.org is genuinely the best free resource out there for most people, i used it for all three of my exams and it works well because it tracks which questions you keep getting wrong and drills those harder. the question pool approach is totally valid for Technician honestly, the questions aren't that tricky and once you've done a few hundred practice rounds you'll recognize them on the real test. General has some more involved stuff about propagation and feedlines where actually understanding it helps, but you can still mostly memorize your way through if you want. as for what you can do with each license, Tech gets you all the VHF and UHF privileges which is fine for local repeater stuff and things like APRS, but HF is basically locked except for a small slice of 10 meters. General opens up most of the HF bands which is where you can actually talk to people in other countries and stuff. some people do go straight for General but honestly just knock out Tech first, the test sessions usually let you sit for multiple elements the same day so you could do both back to back if you study for both. find a local club, a lot of them run free study sessions and the VEs there are pretty helpful.
